La herencia del olvido English Translation

Bookinlight · Untranslated Books

Published in Spain in 2008, Reyes Mate’s prize-winning collection makes memory a test of political justice: what does the present owe to people whom progress, empire, war, and official history have rendered invisible? No complete English edition was located in the publisher, library, and bookseller records checked on 1 August 2026. The La herencia del olvido English Translation gap therefore keeps one of contemporary Spanish philosophy’s clearest arguments about victims and historical responsibility largely beyond Anglophone debate.

Introducing the Book

La herencia del olvido gathers ten connected essays written at the intersection of philosophy of history, political ethics, Holocaust thought, and Ibero-American intellectual life. Its organizing claim is severe: memory is not merely private recollection or ceremonial respect. It is a way of discovering claims that the victorious account of history has excluded from reality.

The book appeared during Spain’s contentious public reckoning with the Civil War and dictatorship, yet its horizon is wider. Mate moves between the conquest of the Americas, European universalism, Jewish thought, Auschwitz, antisemitism, Gaza, Belchite, terrorism, religion, and Walter Benjamin’s messianic politics. A related French predecessor, Penser en espagnol (PUF, 2001), shares several concerns, but Mate explicitly described the two volumes as different works rather than equivalent editions. That distinction matters for any La herencia del olvido English Translation project.

What the Book Is About

The opening essays ask what it means to think in Spanish without turning language into nationalism. Mate challenges the European habit of presenting a historically situated philosophy as neutral universality. Latin America is not treated as a delayed version of Europe but as a standpoint from which conquest, dependence, exile, and cultural asymmetry expose the imperial residue inside supposedly universal reason.

The middle movement turns to Judaism and modernity. Through Franz Rosenzweig, Walter Benjamin, Kafka, Etty Hillesum, and the aftermath of Auschwitz, Mate argues that modern progress cannot be judged only by its achievements. Its discarded lives and defeated possibilities belong to the truth of the present. Antisemitism, in this account, is not an accidental lapse from modern civilization but a warning about a rationality capable of making singular people expendable in the name of abstraction.

The later essays bring that reasoning into public life: Spain’s historical memory, the visibility of victims, the place of religion in secular society, and Benjamin’s conjunction of messianism and politics. “Compassionate reason” does not mean substituting feeling for argument. It means allowing another person’s suffering—especially suffering erased from the official record—to alter what counts as knowledge, responsibility, and justice.

The book’s central intervention is to make remembrance epistemic and political: what history calls finished may remain an unresolved injustice with claims upon the present.

About the Author

Reyes Mate portrait

Reyes Mate, the publishing name of Manuel-Reyes Mate Rupérez, is a Spanish philosopher whose work has placed memory, the defeated, and the political meaning of victims at the center of moral thought. He earned doctorates from the University of Münster and the Autonomous University of Madrid, helped found the CSIC’s Institute of Philosophy, and directed it from 1990 to 1998.

His major books include La razón de los vencidos, Memoria de Auschwitz, Medianoche en la historia, Tratado de la injusticia, and El tiempo, tribunal de la historia. He also directed the long-running Enciclopedia Iberoamericana de Filosofía. La herencia del olvido is unusually representative because it brings together his two defining projects: philosophy after the Holocaust and the possibility of thinking from the Spanish-speaking world without reproducing European intellectual hierarchy.

Awards and Recognition

Premio Nacional de Ensayo, 2009

Spain’s Ministry of Culture awarded the National Essay Prize directly to La herencia del olvido, recognizing it as the outstanding Spanish essay publication from 2008.

Why the Book Matters

Mate’s importance lies in refusing two easy reductions. He does not treat memory as subjective testimony opposed to factual history, and he does not treat victims as symbols whose only function is moral commemoration. Memory discloses causal and normative relations that a successful present prefers not to see: prosperity linked to conquest, democratic settlements built over unaddressed violence, and universal ideals purchased through exclusions.

This approach joins Benjaminian philosophy of history to concrete Spanish and Ibero-American questions. It also complicates familiar debates about transitional justice. For Mate, an amnesty or institutional settlement may end a conflict without exhausting the claims created by it. The past is politically active wherever present legitimacy depends on suffering that has been declared irrelevant. That proposition remains consequential for scholarship on coloniality, genocide, public memory, reparations, political violence, and the ethics of historical narration. A La herencia del olvido English Translation would connect these debates to a major Spanish account of historical responsibility.

How the Book Was Received

Spanish-language reception broadly recognized the book as a synthesis of Mate’s mature thought. Reviewers valued its ability to connect Jewish philosophy, Ibero-America, and public memory without reducing them to a single historical analogy. The recurring reservation was structural: its “rhizomatic” essay form creates intellectual range, but readers seeking one continuous argument must reconstruct the connections themselves.

LE MONDE DIPLOMATIQUE, SPANISH EDITION

Reviewer: Camilo Gontán

Published: October 2008

Assessment: Gontán reads the essays as an intellectually mobile journey from Mexico City to Gaza and from Auschwitz to Belchite. He emphasizes the book’s challenge to Western systems of marginalization and its use of literature and philosophy to question imperial versions of progress.

LETRAS LIBRES

Reviewer: Sonia Arribas

Published: 31 January 2009

Assessment: Arribas praises Mate for escaping the crude opposition between objective history and subjective memory. Her reading stresses that historical narratives are constituted through suppression and that forgotten truth can reopen apparently settled political meanings. She also identifies the modernity–antisemitism connection as an argument requiring further development.

CONSTELACIONES

Reviewer: María Ayllón Barasoain

Published: 2009

Assessment: Barasoain foregrounds the book’s Benjaminian revision of philosophy of history. She regards its strongest contribution as the attempt to understand European history from the standpoint of those sacrificed to progress, particularly colonized Ibero-America and the Jewish people.

ARBOR

Reviewer: Alberto Antonio Verón Ospina

Published: November–December 2009

Assessment: Verón Ospina calls the volume a map of Mate’s thought, joining Spanish-language philosophy, Latin American particularity, Jewish modernity, and Auschwitz. He especially values its demand that philosophy answer the neglected other and its critique of progress whenever abstract improvement requires concrete sacrifice.

EL PAÍS

Reviewer: Javier Rodríguez Marcos

Published: 21 October 2009

Assessment: In a prize-day critical profile, Rodríguez Marcos describes the ten essays as rigorous yet accessible and centers their linked concern with Ibero-America and Jewish thought. The article also clarifies Mate’s aim: a universalism made answerable to historical difference rather than converted into an imperial program.

Why It Should Be Translated into English

An English edition would add a distinctly Spanish and Ibero-American voice to fields often organized around French, German, and Anglophone theories of memory. Mate’s engagement with Benjamin and Rosenzweig is internationally legible, but his originality emerges from placing that tradition beside conquest, exile, Spanish historical memory, and the asymmetries of “universal” European philosophy.

The La herencia del olvido English Translation would serve readers in political theory, philosophy of history, Holocaust and genocide studies, Latin American studies, memory studies, religious studies, and transitional justice. A scholarly trade edition with a translator’s note and a concise introduction could also explain the Spanish memory debates of the late 2000s and distinguish this book from the related French volume Penser en espagnol.

English readers need this book because it makes the victims of empire, fascism, and political settlement participants in reason—not merely objects of sympathy or commemoration.
